Wikipedia

Writing for one’s blog feels safe. It was created by that person so as long as there is no hate speech or false information, it feels that little harm can be done. If a reader finds an error, a comment can easily be left and an amended version can be introduced within a matter of minutes. With Wikipedia, the process involves a community. Individuals who are experts on a multitude of topics have crafted detailed and in-depth articles that showcase the rich history of many topics. Just look at this article detailing the Arts in Seattle. In some cases, it can be an intimidating task to edit a Wikipedia article.

Throughout my elementary and middle school years, I was trained to never click on a Wikipedia article – “they are all untrue and can’t be trusted!” This course and assignment have opened my eyes to the positive side of the internet and to Wikipedia. Wikipedia fosters consistent collaboration, something that we need more of in today’s society. Learning about Wikipedia and the policies in place made me feel comfortable in suggesting an edit. One rule that really stuck out to me was to “assume good faith.” Oftentimes, the internet can be a platform where individuals are attacked for multiple reasons – sometimes just for asking questions. I took great care in deciding what to add to Wikipedia.

Before suggesting edits, I wanted to make sure that the information I thought I knew was actual fact. From my preconceived notions surrounding Wikipedia, I wanted to guarantee I wasn’t adding false information – further discrediting Wikipedia in the eyes of some. I was initially planning on adding some well-known, (local) facts about Seattle, but (fortunately), all the information that I could think of to add was already accurately reported. I was impressed to say the least!

The ‘talk’ page for the topic I chose did have recent activity, giving me hope my intended edit might warrant a response, but it has yet to receive any feedback. I did add my information to the ‘article’ page. I realize that just as many people have access to Wikipedia as to my blog, but something about adding information to an online Encyclopedia made this a tall order.

This experience/assignment did change my mind regarding Wikipedia. Before adding factual information to Wikipedia, I was intimidated to consider doing so. It seemed like an accessible platform that I was somehow not qualified to write for. Through learning about the importance of Wikipedia and the collaboration that is part of its DNA, I dipped my toe in. I realize that as long as the information added is factual, anyone, including myself, has the power and ability to add valuable knowledge to a particular topic. I was also really impressed with the sense of community that is fostered and demonstrated across a wide variety of topics. From the articles that I reviewed, it felt that all contributors realize that the job they are responsible for is a big one – adding to the pride that many already feel for this platform and its body of work.
